First, what is a business blog?

A blog is a place on your website where you can easily and frequently add short, informative articles or instructional videos about your industry, product or service. You do this via a content management system [CMS]. If you can use Microsoft Word, you can use a content management system.

How is a blog useful for your business?

Three of the many reasons include:
  1. Search engines rank more highly those pages with fresh updated content, making it easier for your prospects to find you before they find your competitors. That's also why you want your blog to be integrated with your website rather than being hosted on a different website.
  2. People who are looking for information about your products or services appreciate fresh, updated content also, and are more likely to revisit your blog which leads to further search engine promotion. Search engines promote sites with frequent, relevant content updates and frequent visitors.
  3. Your blog posts are an opportunity for you to establish your expertise and credibility as an authority in your industry.

If you're still wondering why you would even bother to invest your valuable time and effort into blogging for your business, then these startling facts from Australian research in July 2011 may shock you. In the survey blog readers revealed that:

  1. 89% are swayed by a blogger’s review of a product or service and would like to try it for themselves.
  2. 89% make the purchasing decisions in their household and of these, 87% have learnt about a new product or service via a blog.
  3. 90% pass on blog information to family and friends.
  4. 92% have used a search engine to find out more about a brand after reading about it on a blog post.
  5. 78% agree that blogs are a better source of information than traditional and mainstream media.
